How To Create A Momentum Mantra

How To Create A Momentum Mantra

If you set any resolutions this year, I hope you’re off to a strong start!

Chances are you probably set an outcome-based goal or two like, “I want to lose 20 pounds.”

While knowing the outcome you’re working towards is important, many people fail at their resolutions because they forget to place just as much focus on the following:

#1 The actions it will take to get there

#2 Believing that you can

The second might sound a bit cliche, but it’s true.

Many people quickly fall back into old habits because they don’t see themselves as someone who lives by the new ones.

As James Clear said, “Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity.”

That’s why with any goal, it’s important to start with who you wish to become and how you want to feel.

Today, I’m sharing a mindset tool that will help you do just that. It’s called a momentum mantra.

A momentum mantra is a positive affirmation in motion, helping you be present and love where you’re at now while simultaneously projecting your awesome self into the future.

It will help you adopt your desired identity and carry your momentum well beyond January.

Here are four steps to create your own:

#1 In your journal, write down your outcome-based goal at the top. Now answer the following questions:

Who do you need to be to get there? How do you hope to feel by achieving it? (In other words, what’s the big WHY behind the goal?)

#2 Write an “I am” or “what is” statement that describes who you are or what you want. Incorporate the feelings you want to feel.

This will remind you that you already are the person you want to be and can experience those feelings now.

#3 Write a sentence with a verb in present tense that describes the momentum you want to feel and end it with “every day.”

This will remind you that you are constantly making progress and evolving, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

#4 Say and write your momentum mantra frequently.

Post it in places you’ll see regularly, or even set a few timers on your phone to remember to repeat your mantra throughout the day. Each time you repeat it, focus on feeling the way you want to feel and envisioning your progress and success.

Bonus Step: Each day, write down a small win you had that proves to yourself you are living this identity.

Here are some examples:

EXAMPLE 1

Let’s say you struggle with consistency and negative self talk each time you fall off track from your goals. You want to feel ease around prioritizing your health and more consistent progress. Your momentum mantra might be…

Being healthy and fit comes easily to me. I’m prioritizing and loving myself more everyday.

EXAMPLE 2

You often feel down about your body. You realize you want to lose the weight to feel strong, beautiful, and confident that you can.

I am powerful and beautiful inside and out. I’m growing stronger every day.

EXAMPLE 3

You’re afraid to slow down and stop pushing so hard in workouts and life or else you fear you’ll gain weight and lose success. You want to feel truly fit and healthy through trusting your body and finding balance rather than running yourself into the ground.

My mind and body are in perfect harmony. I’m trusting and listening to my body more every day.

Remember to use descriptive words and feelings, and keep working it until your mantra leaves you feeling powerful and inspired.

Now time to create your own! Once you do, I’d love to know what it is if you’re up for sharing. Share in the comments below.
